Created for Cancer Research UK and Channel 4 TV show, Stand Up to Cancer, Reverse the Odds is a mobile game that asked viewers to sharpen their gaming skills rather than their money raising skills to help beat cancer sooner.
The game swaps techniques typically used to monetise games for crowd-sourced cancer analysis, leading to millions of cancer slides being analysed by the public—an activity that would normally take scientists months instead of days and speeding up their battle against cancer.
The game is underpinned by the story of the Odds, little characters whose world becomes grey and barren after the girl who looks after them mysteriously falls asleep. They need your help to revive the world and themselves back to their colourful best.
To reverse the Odds decline you must defeat simple, fun arcade puzzle levels based on the classic game, Reversi, but with new twists in play and power ups to boost your moves.
Power ups and access to higher levels is accelerated by players analysing cancer slides in the game. If their analysis matches the analysis of 5 other players form around the world, they are awarded with a gift power they tap to open.
Within weeks players had completed the equivalent of 7 months of scientific research and to date the community has analysed over 3 million cancer slides, helping scientists cure cancer sooner.
Reverse the Odds has won numerous awards including an International Emmy, three Broadcast Digital Awards, Best Online Innovation at the Edinburgh International Television Festival and was named in the Nominet Trust 100.
